Look straight into the camera with your whole head in the frame, hair as you usually wear it, no hat. Even lighting works best.

A floppy sun hat has a low crown and a very wide, soft brim, usually 4 inches or more, that droops at the edges. It is made of straw, raffia or paper straw for summer, and of felt in an autumn version. The wide brim shades the face, the neck and the shoulders, which is why it is the beach hat.

Brim width is what you choose by: the wider it is, the more it frames the face and the more it competes with your shoulders. Wear it level for shade or tipped to one side for a softer outline.

FAQ

How wide should a sun hat brim be?

Skin cancer organizations recommend a brim of at least 3 inches all the way round for real sun protection. Floppy sun hats usually have 4 to 6 inches, which looks dramatic on a tall build and can swamp a petite one.

How do I keep a floppy sun hat on in the wind?

Choose one with an inner drawstring or add a chin cord, and get the right size: a hat that is snug at the band stays on far better than one held on by its brim.
