Look straight into the camera with your whole head in the frame, hair as you usually wear it, no hat. Even lighting works best.

A fedora is a soft felt hat with an indented crown, usually a teardrop or center-dent crease pinched at the front, a grosgrain band and a brim of about 2 to 3 inches that can be snapped down at the front and up at the back. Wool felt is the affordable choice; fur felt is lighter, holds its shape better and copes better with rain.

The brim sets the look. Under about 2 inches it is a stingy brim, close to a trilby; around 2 1/2 inches is the classic; 3 inches and more looks western or dramatic. Wear it level or with a slight tilt, with the band sitting a finger above your ears.

FAQ

What is the difference between a fedora and a trilby?

Brim width and how it is worn. A fedora has a wider brim, about 2 1/2 inches, that can be worn level; a trilby has a short brim angled down at the front and up at the back, and sits further back on the head.

What brim width should I choose?

Go by your build: a brim of about 2 1/2 inches suits most people; broad shoulders and a big head carry 3 inches, a slight frame looks better under 2 1/4.
